Water
A widow at eight years old, Chuyia is sent to a commune for similarly bereaved women. But while Gandhi’s crusade against British rule and outdated traditions gains popularity, the widows are left to fend for themselves at the edges of acceptable society. Deepa Mehta’s involving and beautifully composed drama concludes a controversial trilogy which challenges the fundamentals of Hinduism; a worthy nominee for the 2007 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
