Best known for his music videos for Depeche Mode and U2, director Anton Corbijn’s feature debut is a beautifully shot black-and-white biopic of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis who killed himself in 1980, aged just 23. Powerful performances from newcomer Sam Riley as the troubled singer and Samantha Morton as his young wife make for a moving portrait of love and despair.
