Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are best but totally platonic friends. As time goes by, however, the spectre of sex looms ever larger over their beautiful friendship. Director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron create the perfect romantic comedy by putting the emphasis on comedy and allowing the romance to follow. It also owes its success to the sparkling chemistry between the two stars and supporting couple Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. But it's Reiner's mum who gets the best line as a fellow diner who witnesses Ryan's public 'faking it' scene. Orgasmic.
