Whatever Works
Woody Allen returns to the city that inspired him for this story of a Manhattan misanthrope (Larry David) whose caustic world view is lifted with the arrival of a joyously naïve Southern gal (Evan Rachel Wood). A free-flowing script laden with Allen’s trademark bon mots and some game supporting play – particularly from Patricia Clarkson’s bible-basher turned free-loving art mom – make this one of the writer/director’s most watchable outings in an age.
