Frozen River
When trailer mom Ray Eddy's gambling addicted spouse takes off with the cash deposit for a new home, she needs cash fast. While searching for her missing hubbie, she chances upon Mohawk girl Lila, who claims she has the perfect get-rich-quick plan - smuggling illegal Chinese immigrants across the frozen St Lawrence river. Debut director Courtney Hunt's taut thriller wrings the emotions thanks to a raw, vanity-free, and deservedly Oscar-nominated performance from Melissa Leo as the desperate mother.
