Life is Beautiful
Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni directs himself to Oscar-winning effect as an Italian Jew who tries to shield his son from the horrors of a concentration camp. Making light of the Holocaust is a tricky proposition, but Benigni deftly treads the line between tragedy and comedy to realise his heartfelt vision. As well as Benigni's Best Actor gong, the Academy also rewarded Nicola Piovani's evocative music and pronounced it Best Foreign Film of 1997.
