Jane Eyre (1943)
Plain and poor orphan Jane Eyre (Joan Fontaine) comes to Thornfield Hall as governess to the young ward of Edward Rochester (Orson Welles). She's immediately attracted to the enigmatic Mr Rochester - a man twice her age - but complications arise with the arrival of society beauty Blanche Ingram. Classy, oft-turbulent Hollywood take on Charlotte Bronte's brooding romance, with Welles' influence apparent on both sides of the camera - albeit with Robert Stevenson officially in the director's chair. Look out for a young Elizabeth Taylor as Jane's doomed childhood friend Helen.
