Carrie (1952)
William Wyler's classic melodrama follows the fortunes of a naive young woman (Jennifer Jones) who loses her innocence in turn-of-the-century Chicago. Struggling to reach her ambitions, Carrie becomes mistress to an uncaring salesman (Eddie Albert) while falling for a married man (Laurence Olivier). The consequences are devastating. Splendidly staged and wrenchingly performed, this should not be confused with Stephen King's tale of telepathic teenage revenge.
