Requiem for a Dream
Darren Aronofsky's relentlessly grim yet riveting adaptation of Huburt Selby Jr's chronicle of drug abuse switches between four souls as they descend into the oblivion of addiction. Oscar nominee Ellen Burstyn is outstanding as the pill-popping housewife whose dealer son (Jared Leto) follows her into the abyss. Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans were never braver nor better; Clint Mansell's hypnotically insistent score makes it an unmissable fix.
