Robert Redford's Oscar-winning directorial debut sees an upper-middle-class fall apart following the death of the eldest son. Timothy Hutton was never better as the guilt-ridden brother through whom the tragedy unfolds while Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore are similarly exceptional as his devastated parents. Writer Alvin Sargeant - who went on to script Spider-Man 2 and 3 - won Academy gold (alongside Hutton and director Redford) for his splendid adaptation of Judith Guest's novel. Forever tagged as the film that stole Raging Bull's thunder as 1980's Best Picture - but don't hold that against it.
