Is Anybody There?
Michael Caine consolidates his position as a whiskery British national treasure in this bittersweet saga of an elderly magician slipping regretfully into mental oblivion with the onset of Alzheimer's. What could be a wallow in mawkishness is sharpened up by a tart script and a wonderfully natural performance from young Bill Milner as death-obsessed ten-year-old. He's the son of the couple who run the retirement home where Caine's bolshie old duffer reluctantly enters his twilight years.
