Growing up in a bleak Welsh resort is difficult enough without the additional concerns of girlfriend trouble and the gnawing scenario that your mum might be about to run off with a neighbouring mystic. Debut director Richard Ayoade’s (Moss in The IT Crowd) excellent comedy showcases neat performances from Craig Roberts as the angst-consumed 15-year-old negotiating the emotional minefield of young love and Sally Hawkins as his superbly skittish mother. It could be for Wales what Gregory’s Girl was to Scotland.
