The Guard
In writer-director John Michael McDonagh's debut, Brendan Gleeson plays Sgt Gerry Doyle, an unorthodox, small-town Irish policeman with a gift for politically incorrectness and a weakness for prostitutes. So when an international drug-smuggling ring comes to Galway, who better than Doyle to help uptight FBI agent Everett (Don Cheadle) with his investigation? Well, pretty much anyone. McDonagh - brother of In Bruges director Martin - shows the family knack for a sharp script and a fondness for Gleeson's enticing world weariness.
