Versatile British director Michael Winterbottom's cautionary sci-fi drama warns of a future where matchmaking glitches of ill-suited couples are avoided by adhering to Code 46. It's a regulation applied to oversee genetic engineering and the omniscient world government of tomorrow - the Sphinx - enforces it without favour. William (Tim Robbins) and Maria (Samantha Morton) fall foul of the code when they enjoy a brief affair after he is sent to Shanghai to investigate the company where she's a drone.
