The Rum Diary
After a dose of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Johnny Depp dabbles once again in the work of his late friend, the writer Hunter S Thompson, in this slickly scuzzy adaptation of Thompson’s first novel. Depp plays Paul Kemp, a boozy journalist who comes to Puerto Rico in 1960 looking for a fresh start. But with the rum flowing and the paper going down the pan, Paul finds his ideals and integrity sorely tested by a slick capitalist (Aaron Eckhart) and his good-time girlfriend (Amber Heard). Writer-director Bruce Robinson comes out of an 18-year retirement to serve up a cool cocktail of Mad Men and his own alco-classic Withnail & I.
